Gossip girl?
I've started watching the show "Gossip Girl" recently, which is about rich children and their families. They have these crazy messed up lives, changing (and sometimes even exchanging them) among friends and enemies. Indians like us cannot relate to this philosophy because even if you end up being that rich, the societal norms here don't make these situations possible.
Now, if you're wondering why do I still watch it if I can't even relate to them, it is because this show seems like a perfect example of "Embracing the mess". Their lives are massively entangled but they still take out time to be happy and to introspect and bring about necessary changes. I can't help but think that if they can put up with all their shambles and still have fun, why can't we do the same? At the other times, it makes me realize that they need hookups and new partners to enjoy life, while just the funny taste of blueberry shake makes my day. Maybe it's not that great to have a life like that because it comes with its downside (even though those people live on the "Upper East Side" XP).
But is it all too different or are we sailing in the same river? The main concept of this show consists of a website called "Gossip Girl", on which an unknown person posts gossip about these rich children. Now, if we come to think of it, aren't our lives also full of people gossiping about our successes and failures? We also get jealous and have people getting jealous of us. So, the way of living might be different but maybe our lives are more similar to theirs than we think. We crave our parents' attention like the character "Chuck Bass". We would go to lengths for our best friends, just so they don't get hurt, like "Serena Van Der Woodsen" and "Blair Waldorf". We sometimes wish to get accepted by those around us like "Jenny Humphrey". And we also want to give our relationships more chances instead of acknowledging the fact that it's over like "Dan Humphrey".
So, are we still that different from those living on the "Upper East Side"?
