FOMO

This is a common abbreviation among millennials which stands for 'Fear Of Missing Out. It has been in use for a very long time but lately, it feels like everyone is actually getting a hang of it. Just recently, I came across a post on Instagram which read as follows: "At this time of a pandemic  I don't know what's worse this sense of being lost or the feeling that you are not doing enough." And this got me thinking about how our lives have changed and how we have evolved in this time of difficulty. At this point, there are two types of lifestyles which people have resorted to: There are the ones who have enjoyed all this time like they'll never get to experience this again(which is probably true) and for someone like me, this requires a lot of guts because I'm the kind of person who feels guilty on waking up after 10 am, even if I slept at 3 am. Most of these people have a sense of how hectic and chaotic our lives would get once the doctors come up with ...

James Bond Martini

So, I have a hard drink or two when I am with my friends in college, occasionally. My parents know that and I can say that they are chill about this because my dad to drinks sometimes. But when it comes to having drinks with him, this is what happens: Me: Dad, can I have a drink too? It's been months now... Dad: Umm(with a lot of hesitation)… Yeah, sure! (He makes a drink with 20mL Vodka for me instead of 30mL and that's okay as long as I can get another drink.) After that drink, Me: Can I have one more please (puppy eyes)? Dad: No no! No need to drink all this. All this is not good for health. (While sipping his third drink...) This is the usual story, so I avoid drinking at home. But just last week, we went to dinner with some relatives. I was sitting alongside my mom and my dad and uncle were about to order their drinks. So, suddenly my mom turns to me and asks," Do you wanna have a drink too?" I was so damn shocked. I could not even the least imagine my mom offer...

The Feature Wall

In one of my previous blogs, "Unveiling my artwork", I told everyone about how I created my art page on Instagram. So, I sketched, doodled, and painted for posting on that art page, sometimes regularly and sometimes a bit irregularly. So, naturally, there were a bunch of drawings in my art file. I have a soft board in my room, thus some of those art pieces found their place on that soft board, while the others sat in the drawer of my stationery items.  Now, many of you might be familiar with the ritual of inviting a newlywed couple for lunch or dinner. So, one of my paternal uncles got married two years back and each of his first cousins was supposed to carry out the above-mentioned ritual and my dad was one of them. Soon, after they got married, we started with the renovation of our house, so there wasn't any point in calling them in a half-broken house, with cement and paints everywhere. So, we decided to wait till the renovation was over. But unfortunately, that took a...

Best friends

I can bet that half of you ignored the 's' after "Best friend" in the title. That's okay because when most of us think about "Best friends", we usually refer to just one person. But I believe that we can have many best friends, each with a different sense of excitement, humor, advice, and craziness. I'm going to describe what I'm saying here by talking about my best friends. The Long-Distance best friend: This is the one who I've known from school. She changed school and shifted to Sri Lanka, because of her dad's job in the tenth standard. She moved away and we hardly meet, probably once in two to three years, but our friendship has grown ever since. We share everything over a call and we know all of each other's friends and secret crushes. Our parents say that we are sisters from different mothers. So, in short, it's like an ideal yet virtual friendship. The school best friend who's always been there with you: We've know...

Internships

It is the internships-and-placements season in college. The students who have just entered the third year have to take tests for getting into an internship program (which would take place after a year). This is the time when all of the pressure, which we often see in the movies that depict life in an Engineering college, starts to build up. Now if you think about it for a minute, did that second sentence even make much sense? What is the hurry of taking those tests and interviews? Even if you get selected (which obviously does not happen to 99% of the population), you ultimately have to wait for a year to start with the training. But it seems like, the companies love to see the students under that pressure. The internships are mostly divided into two or three parts, depending upon the branch of engineering which you are pursuing. So, there is one for Computer Science and related circuit branches (the one for me), the other is for mechanical and civil engineering branches, and the last ...

Expectations

We, as humans, tend to expect certain things out of everything, be it a new food item or any of our relationships. These expectations are of two kinds. The first kind is where you, kind of, know that you are expecting something specific like if you have a close friend, the last thing you expect from them is to wish you on your birthday. The other kind is when you subconsciously have certain suppositions in your mind but are not aware of them. These are the ones that might cause everyone a bit of trouble. Let me try to give an example of that second kind. So, all through our life, we keep meeting new people and often get attached to them. Remember in elementary school, when you were a friend of all those who commuted in the same school bus? They all seemed so close to us at that stage in life but as we grew, we kept meeting new people, sometimes even forgetting the old ones. We connect to a lot of people in our school life and since most of us usually spend a good deal of time in a...

Catch a break !

A break from everything is all that you need sometimes. Even though we spend all our day watching web series and eating (because that's all we've been doing during this quarantine period) but sometimes we need a break from that too! It's basically a monotonous lifestyle that makes us want to alter the pattern. Think about the time when you were like, "I don't seem to catch a break!" and try to relate to what comes ahead. All of us need some escape routes to get away from our routine and do something that soothes us. But what do we mean by an escape route? Is it necessary for an escape route to be some kind of creative activity? Is it even important to take a break? Let's try to answer these questions and many more one by one. So, an escape route is something which helps you to spend some time with yourself and maybe even helps you to regain self-confidence. It helps you to get away not only from your everyday life but also helps you relax mentally. Most of...
