A good listener
Isn't that who all of us need sometimes-Just a Good Listener? Take a minute to ponder over that...
One day, I talked to a friend who mentioned that he can be a good listener if I ever want to talk about anything. And how many people can actually say that? Don't you sometimes feel that just letting it all out would solve your problems instead of actually finding a solution or getting any advice from anyone? That happens sometimes and not because you want to run away from your problems but because they might not be ours to solve. Let me give you an example; so my college has decided to extend our current semester by a month and that too just for taking end semester evaluations. After hearing this news, all of us just wanted to rant, for the sake of letting it all out. It's not like we can change the dean's decision or we don't know that we might have to study now, but having someone who can listen to all your rant always helps.
The question now arises are you a good listener? To test that you just have to answer a few questions:
1. Do you try to avoid calls when you suspect that the caller is about to rant and cry?
2. How do you react when someone suddenly starts telling you about their problems?
3. Do you get impatient on call?
4. Do you make excuses to hang up when someone starts talking about their issues?
If you were nodding your head while reading any of the above questions, you might not be a great listener but it is not something to be worried about. We can always improve.
The next question stands, what can be done to become a better listener? Trust me, it's not that difficult. Just start by paying a little more attention to what others have to say. It may be difficult at first because you might feel that the other person's reaction to the current situation is wrong but that might not be true for them. At that time, you can simply make them feel at ease by listening to whatever they have to say about it. You will gradually get better at it and trust me, once you do so, you'll realize that it actually feels good to help someone. You would actually get a sense of satisfaction and being someone's good listener is all you would have to do for that.
