Am I an engineer?

If we look at what course I've been studying for the past 3 years, then I sure am gonna be an engineer. But does getting a degree actually make me an engineer? I don't feel like the answer to that question would be yes. After all, what good is an engineer who can't answer questions related to his/her core branch of engineering (which is Electronics and Communication in my case)? In fact, I am someone who's not even fond of gadgets. Youngsters are obsessed with getting high-tech phones and laptops every now and then, just to stay up-to-date with technology. But I find this trend stupid because why do you have to waste money and buy new stuff, even though your previous one is working perfectly? Any tech-savvy person reading this would come up with a debate on why it's important to carry out those upgradations but that won't change the fact that I still find it useless.

Anyway, engineering is such a technical course that enhances a person's ability to dive deep into our surroundings. But being an engineer is definitely not what you learn during the course. The course teaches you to meet deadlines, check if you passed a particular subject, and check if you are even allowed to take a subject's examination or you've been detained because of short attendance. That summarizes the college course (and definitely not college life). So, everyone who graduates from an engineering college doesn't know what's coming his/her way because no one teaches us how to survive in the real world and work a real job. The most you can do is prepare yourself for it and that's one other skill you gain while in an engineering college. It teaches you to teach yourself everything, which is why you develop the ability to learn during your job. This is the reason that engineers are considered to be versatile by nature.

So, if you ever ask me if I am an engineer, then I'll proudly say that yes I am an engineer (even though a fake one, when it comes to my technical ability) because I have learned to do and learn everything on my own during my engineering course.
