(Not) Working From Office
My university requires us to complete one semester of internship as part of our course. Ironically, I chose my internship in a management consulting firm to fulfill the requirement of my engineering degree. So, an internship is basically putting up with long working hours for being underpaid. Let me talk you through my experience so far.
I started my internship in January and it was "Work from Home" then. My office re-opened on an optional basis in March and excited as I was, I planned to go one day. I was really thrilled and eager and dressed up in a lovely formal outfit to seize the day. That day, I spent the whole day wandering about in the office, meeting some new people, and taking office tours. My senior knew that it was my first time in the office, so he was sure that I wouldn't work much and I didn't. "First day at the office" seemed like a valid reason to not work. I came back home and was very tired from all the meandering. It was a really fun day though and that's all about my first day.
Since then, I have been to the office three more times and I realized that I've made it a point to not work when I'm at the office. There's always one thing or the other I'm busy with, like the other day I was busy giving office tours to my friends, who came to the office the first time. Honestly, that felt good because they made me feel like I'm an expert at this, which I am (thanks to my roaming about in the office during the previous visits). I even knew where the non-working cold coffee machine of the office was, which is interesting because there was only one of those among the operational floors of the office. I have thus concluded that if I plan to go to the office, it is for one of the following reasons: I'm bored at home and wish to have a change in scenery for acting lazy OR I'm tired of wearing pajamas and wish to get all dolled up.
I wonder how people worked at the office before the pandemic. Now, even my parents know that I don't go to the office to work because the very next day I'm like, "Why doesn't my work finish? I should've worked a bit yesterday." But I repeat the whole cycle all over again each time. I can say that if this is how "Working from the office" is gonna be like, I'm more than happy to go to the office every day. Of course, that'll probably mean never getting my work done, and eventually, I wouldn't have an office to "Work from Office". At last, I would like to wish everyone who's planning to start working from office, a very good luck. Also, please give me some tips if you guys actually manage to get things done.
